Donna and I are fortunate to live near Emmitsburg, Maryland which is the home of the Shrine of Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton, Saint Mary's Seminary, and the National Shrine Grotto of Lourdes. The Grotto, known affectionately as "Mary's Mountain," is a replica of the shrine in Lourdes, France and draws thousands of visitors from around the world who come to pay homage annually to our Blessed Mother. They are in much need of funds to build a Visitors Welcome Center. If you feel that our prayer book has been of value to you and would like to show your appreciation, we invite you to make a donation to their wonderful cause securely online. Choose "Grotto Fund" as your gift purpose. Thanks and may God bless you!

What is a rosary?

Merriam-Webster defines the word "rosary" as rose garden. The Hail Marys of the rosary are like spiritual roses gathered together from our garden of prayers into a bouquet for Our Lady.

A rosary contains twenty decades and five Mysteries. Each Mystery has five parts or scenes from the life of Christ related to its type. For example, the Sorrowful Mysteries have five scenes drawn from the passion and death of Christ. Each Mystery has five decades of ten Hail Marys. Each decade is preceded by one Our Father and followed by one Glory Be and the Fátima Prayer. The chart below illustrates the structure of the rosary.

Isn't the rosary just for Catholics?

Since the rosary is based on scripture, both Catholics and non-Catholics can derive much benefit from praying the rosary.

Isn't the repetition of the prayers boring?

Only if the rosary is said improperly.

So how do you pray the rosary properly?

Imagine...

The calm, rhythmic repetition of the prayers... like soothing celestial music... like Gregorian chant in the background... while we daydream about the Lord. Not your everyday kind of daydream, but a dream where we visualize - even become a part of - a scene in the life of Christ!

That's how its supposed to work. Not too difficult if you have a fertile imagination. If not, then the meditative, visualizing aspect of the rosary may prove to be a stumbling block. Let's look at the process more closely.

It takes about five minutes to pray the ten Hail Marys that accompany a particular mystery. That may not seem like a long time to meditate on a particular scene, but some may run out of ideas after just one minute! And you have five such scenes to create in your mind; twenty if you say the complete rosary! Moreover, you're bound to eventually get bored with the scenes you create which can lead to a loss of interest.

I've been saying the daily rosary for quite a while and I experienced the same problems. However, one day I happened to open a book of commentaries on each of the Mysteries and I wondered if I could read the commentary to myself while praying the Hail Marys of the rosary outloud. Not only was it possible, but it was extremely interesting. In fact, I came to the end of the rosary and didn't realize I had run out of beads! Now that's what I call being swept away by the power of prayer!

Moreover, that was just the beginning. Since then I've read the Life of Christ by Fulton Sheen, the 4-Vol Life of Jesus Christ by Anne Catherine Emmerich, The 4-Vol City of God by Sister Agreda, the Meditations on the Life of Christ by Thomas A Kempis, and many more! Just choose readings that pertain to the mysteries you're praying. I could even read the New Testament while praying the rosary since all but the two last Glorious Mysteries are drawn from the New Testament! I'm always looking for spiritual literature to use for rosary meditations. Talk about keeping the rosary fresh!

"Rosary Meditations:
A Bouquet of Roses for Our Lady"

Rosary Meditations

Let's take a look at how I do it:

The following excerpt from "The Life of Jesus Christ" by Anne Catharine Emmerich contains 10 check marks, each denoting where I said a Hail Mary and the lines of text I read. I say the Hail Marys outloud while I read quietly. I finish a paragraph, if it's not too long, before saying the next Hail Mary. Otherwise, I pray another Hail Mary to cover the rest of the paragraph. I only say 10 Hail Marys. If I don't finish the section I'm reading, I put a check mark where I stopped so I know where to continue reading the next time. I can also finish reading the section without prayers. The method is not as important as the message.

Jesus' Radiant Ascension

Cheap Disney Vacations![START] And now the rays of light from above united with the glory emanating from Jesus, and I saw Him disappearing, dissolving as it were in the light from heaven, vanishing as He rose. I lost sight of His head first. Cheap Disney Vacations! It appeared as if one sun was lost in another, as if one flame entered another, as if a spark floated into a flame. It was as if one were gazing into the full midday splendors of the sun, though this light was whiter and clearer. Cheap Disney Vacations!Full day compared with this would be dark. First, I lost sight of Jesus' head, then His whole person, and lastly His feet radiant with light disappeared in the celestial glory. I saw innumerable souls from all sides going into that light and vanishing on high with the Lord. Cheap Disney Vacations!I can not say that I saw Him becoming apparently smaller and smaller like something flying up in the air, for He disappeared as it were in a cloud of light.

Out of that cloud, something like dew, like a shower of light fell upon all below, and when they could no longer endure the splendor, they were seized with amazement and terror. Cheap Disney Vacations! The Apostles and disciples, who were nearest to Jesus, were blinded by the dazzling glare. They were forced to lower their eyes, while many cast themselves prostrate on their face. The Blessed Virgin was standing close behind them and gazing calmly straight ahead.

Cheap Disney Vacations! After some moments when the splendor began to diminish, the whole assembly in deep silence, their soul swayed by varying emotions, gazed fixedly up at the brightness which continued visible for a long time. I saw two figures appear in this light. They looked small at first, but seemed to grow larger and larger as they descended. Cheap Disney Vacations! They were clothed in long white garments, and each held a staff in one hand. They looked like Prophets. They addressed the multitude, their voice like trumpets resounding loud and clear. It seemed to me that they could surely be heard in Jerusalem. Cheap Disney Vacations! They made no motion, stood perfectly still, and said: "Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye looking up to heaven? This Jesus who is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come as you have seen Him going into heaven I." After these words the figures vanished. The brightness remained for a while longer and then disappeared like daylight retiring before the darkness of night. Cheap Disney Vacations! The disciples were quite out of themselves, for they now comprehended what had happened to them. The Lord had left them and gone to His Heavenly Father! Many stunned by grief and amazement fell to the earth. When the glare had entirely died away, they arose again, and the others gathered around them. Cheap Disney Vacations! They formed groups, the Blessed Virgin stepped forward, and so they stood for some time longer recovering themselves, talking together, and gazing upward. At last, the Apostles and disciples went back to the house of the Last Supper, and the Blessed Virgin followed. Some were weeping like children that refuse to be comforted, others were lost in thought. [STOP]The Blessed Virgin, Peter, and John were very calm, and full of consolation. I saw however some among the different groups who remained unmoved, unbelieving, and full of doubts. They withdrew from the rest.

On the top of Mount Olivet, from which Jesus ascended, there was a level rock. On it He stood addressing the multitude before He blessed them and the cloud of light received Him. His footsteps remained impressed on the stone, and on another the mark of one hand of the Blessed Virgin. It was past noon before the crowd entirely dispersed.

Now it's your turn. Below is an excerpt from the book. I've drawn the text from Sacred Scripture and divided the citations into 10 sections - one for each Hail Mary. You may not finish a paragraph by the time you finish your Hail Mary or vice versa. That's fine. It's your rosary. Start and stop where you like.

First Joyful Mystery: The Annunciation

1 Our Father
10 Hail Marys

For this reason, the Lord himself will grant to you a sign. Behold, a virgin will conceive, and she will give birth to a son, and his name will be called Immanuel. (Isaiah 7:14) And the Spirit of the Lord will rest upon him: the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and fortitude, the spirit of knowledge and piety. (Isaiah 11:2)
For unto us a child is born, and unto us a son is given. And leadership is placed upon his shoulder. And his name shall be called: wonderful Counselor, mighty God, father of the future age, Prince of Peace. His reign will be increased, and there will be no end to his peace. He will sit upon the throne of David and over his kingdom, to confirm and strengthen it, in judgment and justice, from now even unto eternity. The zeal of the Lord of hosts shall accomplish this. (Isaiah 9:6-7)
Send down dew from above, O heavens, and let the clouds rain down upon the just! Let the earth open and spring forth a savior! (Isaiah 45:8) O Lord, send forth the Lamb, the Ruler of the earth, from the Rock of the desert to the mountain of the daughter of Zion. (Isaiah 45:8) For as the earth brings forth its seedlings and the garden produces its seeds, so will the Lord God bring forth justice and praise in the sight of all the nations. (Isaiah 61:11)
Sing praise and rejoice, daughter of Zion. For behold, I approach, and I will dwell in your midst, says the Lord. (Zechariah 2:10) Rejoice well, daughter of Zion, shout for joy, daughter of Jerusalem. Behold, your King will come to you: the Just One, the Savior. (Zechariah 9:9) Let us be glad and exult. And let us give glory to him. For the marriage feast of the Lamb has arrived, and his wife has prepared herself.” (Revelation 19:7)
You are my son, this day have I begotten you. (Psalms 2:7) I will set upon your throne from the fruit of your lineage. (Psalms 131:11) I have set up a covenant with my elect. I have sworn to David my servant: I will prepare your offspring, even in eternity. And I will build up your throne, from generation to generation. (Psalms 88:4-5)
Behold, the days are approaching, says the Lord, when I will raise up to David a righteous branch. And a king will reign, and he will be wise. And he will exercise judgment and justice upon the earth. In those days, Judah will be saved, and Israel will live in confidence. And this is the name that they will call him: ‘The Lord, our Just One. (Jeremiah 23:5-6)
Behold, the days are approaching, says the Lord, when I will fulfill the good word that I have spoken to the house of Israel and to the house of Judah. In those days and at that time, I will cause the seedling of justice to spring up from David, and he will accomplish judgment and justice upon the earth. (Jeremiah 33:14-15)
Then, in the sixth month, the Angel Gabriel was sent by God, to a city of Galilee named Nazareth, to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the name of the virgin was Mary. And upon entering, the Angel said to her: “Hail, full of grace. The Lord is with you. Blessed are you among women.” (Luke 1:26-28)
And when she had heard this, she was disturbed by his words, and she considered what kind of greeting this might be. And the Angel said to her: “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found grace with God. Behold, you shall conceive in your womb, and you shall bear a son, and you shall call his name: JESUS. He will be great, and he will be called the Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give him the throne of David his father. And he will reign in the house of Jacob for eternity. And his kingdom shall have no end.” (Luke 1:29-33)
Then Mary said to the Angel, “How shall this be done, since I do not know man?” And in response, the Angel said to her: “The Holy Spirit will pass over you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. And because of this also, the Holy One who will be born of you shall be called the Son of God. And behold, your cousin Elizabeth has herself also conceived a son, in her old age. And this is the sixth month for her who is called barren. For no word will be impossible with God.” Then Mary said: “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. Let it be done to me according to your word.” And the Angel departed from her. (Luke 1:34-38)

Once you've learned the process, you'll want to apply the technique to new readings. There are so many wonderful spiritual texts out there, you'll never be bored again!

Finally, and perhaps most importantly, why do we say the rosary?

Here are the 15 Promises of the Virgin Mary to Christians who recite the Rosary:

  1. To all those who shall recite my Rosary devoutly, I promise my special protection and very great graces.

  2. Those who shall persevere in the recitation of my Rosary will receive some signal grace.

  3. The Rosary will be a very powerful armor against Hell; it will destroy vice, deliver from sin, and dispel heresy.

  4. The Rosary will make virtue and good works flourish, and will obtain for souls the most abundant divine mercies; it will substitute in hearts love of God for love of the world, and elevate them to desire heavenly and eternal good. Oh, that souls would sanctify themselves by this means!

  5. Those who trust themselves to me through the Rosary will not perish.

  6. Those who shall recite my Rosary piously, considering its mysteries, will not be overwhelmed by misfortune, nor die a bad death. The sinner will be converted; the just will grow in grace and become worthy of eternal life.

  7. Those truly devoted to my Rosary will not die without the consolations of the Church, or without grace.

  8. Those who shall recite my Rosary will find during their life and at their death the light of God, the fullness of His grace, and will share in the merits of the blessed.

  9. I will deliver very promptly from Purgatory the souls devoted to my Rosary.

  10. The true children of my Rosary will enjoy great glory in Heaven.

  11. What you shall ask through my Rosary you shall obtain.

  12. Those who propagate my Rosary will obtain through me aid in all their necessities.

  13. I have obtained from my Son that all confreres of the Rosary shall have for their brethren in life and death the saints of Heaven.

  14. Those who recite my Rosary faithfully are all my beloved children, the brothers and sisters of Jesus Christ.

  15. Devotion to my Rosary is a great sign of predestination (to heaven).

Need I say more? Now go pray the rosary!

Apostles Creed:

I believe in God, the Father Almighty,
Creator of Heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ,

Our Father:

Our Father, Who art in heaven, Hallowed be Thy Name. Thy Kingdom come. Thy Will be done, on earth as it is in Heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.

HOW TO USE THE ROSARY BEADS

NOTE:

Before beginning the rosary, state your intentions for saying the rosary. Some examples of intentions include:

  • for the end of abortion and embryonic stem cell research

  • for the well-being and protection of loved ones

  • for the healing of family and friends

  • in reparation for personal sins and the sins of the whole world

  • for those who have passed on who might be in Purgatory

If convenient, I say the prayers of the rosary outloud, except for my intentions, while I read the text to myself.

Introduction:

  • (1) Sign of the Cross - bless yourself with the cross, mentally state your intentions for saying the rosary, and then pray the Apostles Creed

  • (2) One Our Father on the large bead

  • (3) Three Hail Marys - one on each of the small beads

  • Conclude with the Glory Be and Fátima Prayer before entering the circle of beads

First Decade:

  • (4) One Our Father - proceed counterclockwise

  • (5) Ten Hail Marys

  • Conclude the decade with the Glory Be and Fátima Prayer

Follow the same pattern through all the decades of the rosary.

Conclusion: finish the rosary with the following prayers:

Hail Holy Queen:

Hail, holy Queen, mother of mercy, our life, our sweetness, and our hope. To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve. To thee do we send up our sighs mourning and weeping in this valley of tears. Turn then, most gracious advocate, thine eyes of mercy toward us, and after this our exile show us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus. O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary.

Pray for us, O Holy Mother of God.
That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

Let us pray:

O God, whose only begotten Son, by His life, death, and resurrection, has purchased for us the rewards of eternal salvation. Grant, we beseech Thee, that meditating on these mysteries of the most holy Rosary of the Blessed Virgin Mary, we may imitate what they contain and obtain what they promise, through the same Christ our Lord. Amen.

Second Joyful Mystery: The Visitation

1 Our Father
10 Hail Marys

And in those days, Mary, rising up, traveled quickly into the hill country, to a city of Judah. And she entered into the house of Zechariah, and she greeted Elizabeth. And it happened that, as Elizabeth heard the greeting of Mary, the infant leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. (Luke 1:39-41)
And she cried out with a loud voice and said: “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb. And how does this concern me, so that the mother of my Lord would come to me? For behold, as the voice of your greeting came to my ears, the infant in my womb leaped for joy. And blessed are you who believed, for the things that were spoken to you by the Lord shall be accomplished.” (Luke 1:42-45)
And Mary said: “My soul magnifies the Lord. And my spirit leaps for joy in God my Saviour. For he has looked with favor on the humility of his handmaid. For behold, from this time, all generations shall call me blessed. For he who is great has done great things for me, and holy is his name. And his mercy is from generation to generations for those who fear him. (Luke 1:46-50)
He has accomplished powerful deeds with his arm. He has scattered the arrogant in the intentions of their heart. He has deposed the powerful from their seat, and he has exalted the humble. He has filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he has sent away empty. He has taken up his servant Israel, mindful of his mercy, just as he spoke to our fathers: to Abraham and to his offspring forever.” (Luke 1:51-55)
Then Mary stayed with her for about three months. And she returned to her own house. Now the time for Elizabeth to give birth arrived, and she brought forth a son. And her neighbors and relatives heard that the Lord had magnified his mercy with her, and so they congratulated her. (Luke 1:56-58)
Serve one another through the charity of the Spirit. For the entire law is fulfilled by one word: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” Let us not be deficient in doing good. For in due time, we shall reap without fail. Therefore, while we have time, we should do good works toward everyone, and most of all toward those who are of the household of the faith. (Galatians 13-14, 6:9-10)
The fruit of the Spirit is charity, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, forbearance, meekness, faith, modesty, abstinence, chastity. And the greatest of these is charity. (Corinthians 5:22-23, 13:13)
Let your light shine in the sight of men, so that they may see your good works, and may glorify your Father, who is in heaven. No one lights a candle and places it in hiding, nor under a bushel basket, but upon a lampstand, so that those who enter may see the light. (Matthew 5:16; Luke 11:13)
Love one another with fraternal charity, surpassing one another in honor: in solicitude, not lazy; in spirit, fervent; serving the Lord; in hope, rejoicing; in tribulation, enduring; in prayer, ever-willing; in the difficulties of the saints, sharing; in hospitality, attentive. (Romans 12:10-13)
Draw near and listen, all you who fear God, and I will describe to you how much he has done for my soul. By me, his handmaid, he has fulfilled his mercy, which he promised to the house of Israel. (Psalms 65:16; Judith 13:18)

And it happened in those days that a decree went out from Caesar Augustus, so that the whole world would be enrolled. This was the first enrollment; it was made by the ruler of Syria, Quirinius. And all went to be declared, each one to his own city. Then Joseph also ascended from Galilee, from the city of Nazareth, into Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and family of David, in order to be declared, with Mary his espoused wife, who was with child. (Luke 2:1-5)
Then it happened that, while they were there, the days were completed, so that she would give birth. And she brought forth her firstborn son. And she wrapped him in swaddling clothes and laid him in a manger, because there was no room for them at the inn. And there were shepherds in the same region, being vigilant and keeping watch in the night over their flock. (Luke 2:6-8)
And behold, an Angel of the Lord stood near them, and the brightness of God shone around them, and they were struck with a great fear. And the Angel said to them: “Do not be afraid. For, behold, I proclaim to you a great joy, which will be for all the people. For today a Saviour has been born for you in the city of David: he is Christ the Lord. (Luke 2:9-11)
And this will be a sign for you: you will find the infant wrapped in swaddling clothes and lying in a manger.” And suddenly there was with the Angel a multitude of the celestial army, praising God and saying, “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men of good will.” (Luke 2:12-14)
And it happened that, when the Angels had departed from them into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let us cross over to Bethlehem and see this word, which has happened, which the Lord has revealed to us.” And they went quickly. And they found Mary and Joseph; and the infant was lying in a manger. Then, upon seeing this, they understood the word that had been spoken to them about this boy. (Luke 2:15-17)|
And all who heard it were amazed by this, and by those things which were told to them by the shepherds. But Mary kept all these words, pondering them in her heart. And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, just as it was told to them. (Luke 2:18-20)
And so, when Jesus had been born in Bethlehem of Judah, in the days of king Herod, behold, Magi from the east arrived in Jerusalem, saying: “Where is he who was born king of the Jews? For we have seen his star in the east, and we have come to adore him.” (Matthew 2:1-2)
And behold, the star that they had seen in the east went before them, even until, arriving, it stood still above the place where the child was. Then, seeing the star, they were gladdened by a very great joy. And entering the home, they found the boy with his mother Mary. And so, falling prostrate, they adored him. And opening their treasures, they offered him gifts: gold, frankincense, and myrrh. (Matthew 2:9-11)
Shout joyfully to God, all the earth. Serve the Lord with rejoicing. Enter into his sight in exultation. Know that the Lord himself is God. He made us, and we ourselves did not. We are his people and the sheep of his pasture. Enter his gates with confession, his courts with hymns, and acknowledge him. Praise his name. (Psalms 99:2-4)
Alleluia. Praise the Lord in his holy places. Praise him in the firmament of his power. Praise him for his virtues. Praise him according to the multitude of his greatness. Praise him with the sound of the trumpet. Praise him with psaltery and stringed instrument. Praise him with timbrel and choir. Praise him with strings and organ. Praise him with sweet-sounding cymbals. Praise him with cymbals of jubilation. Let every spirit praise the Lord. Alleluia. (Psalms 150:1-6)

Fourth Joyful Mystery: The Presentation

1 Our Father
10 Hail Marys

And after eight days were ended, so that the boy would be circumcised, his name was called JESUS, just as he was called by the Angel before he was conceived in the womb. (Luke 2:21)
And after the days of her purification were fulfilled, according to the law of Moses, they brought him to Jerusalem, in order to present him to the Lord, just as it is written in the law of the Lord, “For every male opening the womb shall be called holy to the Lord,” and in order to offer a sacrifice, according to what is said in the law of the Lord, “a pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons.” (Luke 2:22-24)
And behold, there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon, and this man was just and God-fearing, awaiting the consolation of Israel. And the Holy Spirit was with him. And he had received an answer from the Holy Spirit: that he would not see his own death before he had seen the Christ of the Lord. (Luke 2:25-26)
And he went with the Spirit to the temple. And when the child Jesus was brought in by his parents, in order to act on his behalf according to the custom of the law, he also took him up, into his arms, and he blessed God and said: “Now you may dismiss your servant in peace, O Lord, according to your word. For my eyes have seen your salvation, which you have prepared before the face of all peoples: the light of revelation to the nations and the glory of your people Israel.” (Luke 2:27-32)
And his father and mother were wondering over these things, which were spoken about him. And Simeon blessed them, and he said to his mother Mary: “Behold, this one has been set for the ruin and for the resurrection of many in Israel, and as a sign which will be contradicted. And a sword will pass through your own soul, so that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.” (Luke 2:33-35)
And there was a prophetess, Anna, a daughter of Phanuel, from the tribe of Asher. She was very advanced in years, and she had lived with her husband for seven years from her virginity. And then she was a widow, even to her eighty-fourth year. And without departing from the temple, she was a servant to fasting and prayer, night and day. And entering at the same hour, she confessed to the Lord. And she spoke about him to all who were awaiting the redemption of Israel. (Luke 2:36-38)
And after they had performed all things according to the law of the Lord, they returned to Galilee, to their city, Nazareth. Now the child grew, and he was strengthened with the fullness of wisdom. And the grace of God was in him. (Luke 2:39-40)
And so I will declare your wonders continuously, even in old age and with grey hairs. Do not abandon me, O God, while I announce your arm to every future generation: your power and your justice, O God, even to the highest great things that you have done. O God, who is like you? (Psalms 70:17-19)
The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light. A light has risen for the inhabitants of the region of the shadow of death. They will rejoice before you, like those who rejoice at the harvest. For you have prevailed over the yoke of their burden, and over the rod of their shoulder, and over the scepter of their oppressor. (Isaiah 9:2-4)
The Lord has made known his salvation. He has revealed his justice in the sight of the nations. He has remembered his mercy and his truth toward the house of Israel. All the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God. (Psalms 97:2-3)

Fifth Joyful Mystery: The Finding of Jesus in the Temple

1 Our Father
10 Hail Marys

And his parents went every year to Jerusalem, at the time of the solemnity of Passover. And when he had become twelve years old, they ascended to Jerusalem, according to the custom of the feast day. And having completed the days, when they returned, the boy Jesus remained in Jerusalem. And his parents did not realize this. (Luke 2:41-43)
But, supposing that he was in the company, they went a day’s journey, seeking him among their relatives and acquaintances. And not finding him, they returned to Jerusalem, seeking him. And it happened that, after three days, they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the doctors, listening to them and questioning them. (Luke 2:44-46)
But all who listened to him were astonished over his prudence and his responses. And upon seeing him, they wondered. And his mother said to him: “Son, why have you acted this way toward us? Behold, your father and I were seeking you in sorrow.” (Luke 2:47-48)
And he said to them: “How is it that you were seeking me? For did you not know that it is necessary for me to be in these things which are of my Father?” And they did not understand the word that he spoke to them. And he descended with them and went to Nazareth. And he was subordinate to them. And his mother kept all these words in her heart. And Jesus advanced in wisdom, and in age, and in grace, with God and men. (Luke 2:49-52)
I sought him whom my soul loves. I sought him, and did not find him. I will rise up, and I will circle through the city. Through the side streets and thoroughfares, I will seek him whom my soul loves. I sought him, and did not find him. The watchers who guard the city found me: “Have you seen him whom my soul loves?” (Song of Songs 3:1-3)
For this I weep, and my eyes bring forth water. For the consoler has been far away from me, changing my soul. (Lamentations 1:16)
And you, sons of Zion, exult and rejoice in the Lord your God. For he has given you a teacher of justice. And the Spirit of the Lord will rest upon him: the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and fortitude, the spirit of knowledge and piety. (Joel 2:23; Isaiah 11:2)
May their hearts be consoled and instructed in charity, with all the riches of a plenitude of understanding, with knowledge of the mystery of God the Father. For in him are hidden all treasures of wisdom and knowledge. (Colossians 2:2-3)
For I am not speaking from myself, but from the Father who sent me. He gave a commandment to me as to what I should say and how I should speak. And I know that his commandment is eternal life. Therefore, the things that I speak, just as the Father has said to me, so also do I speak.” (John 12:49-50)
You are the light of the world. A city set on a mountain cannot be hidden. And they do not light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, so that it may shine to all who are in the house and may glorify your Father, who is in heaven. (Matthew 5:14-16)

First Luminous Mystery: The Baptism of Jesus

1 Our Father
10 Hail Marys

Now in those days, John the Baptist arrived, preaching in the desert of Judea, and saying: “Repent. For the kingdom of heaven has drawn near.” For this is the one who was spoken of through the prophet Isaiah, saying: “A voice crying out in the desert: Prepare the way of the Lord. Make straight his paths.” (Matthew 3:1-3)
And he preached, saying: “A stronger one comes after me. I am not worthy to reach down and loosen the laces of his shoes. I have baptized you with water. Yet truly, he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.” (Mark 1:7-8)
Indeed, I baptize you with water for repentance, but he who will come after me is more powerful than me. I am not worthy to carry his shoes. He will baptize you with the fire of the Holy Spirit. His winnowing fan is in his hand. And he will thoroughly cleanse his threshing floor. And he will gather his wheat into the barn. But the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire.” (Matthew 3:11-12)
This is the one about whom I said, ‘After me arrives a man, who has been placed ahead of me, because he existed before me.’ And I did not know him. Yet it is for this reason that I come baptizing with water: so that he may be made manifest in Israel.” (John 1:30-31)
And I did not know him. But he who sent me to baptize with water said to me: ‘He over whom you will see the Spirit descending and remaining upon him, this is the one who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’ And I saw, and I gave testimony: that this one is the Son of God.” (John 1:33-34)
Then Jesus came from Galilee, to John at the Jordan, in order to be baptized by him. But John refused him, saying, “I ought to be baptized by you, and yet you come to me?” And responding, Jesus said to him: “Permit this for now. For in this way it is fitting for us to fulfill all justice.” Then he allowed him. (Matthew 3:13-15)
And Jesus, having been baptized, ascended from the water immediately, and behold, the heavens were opened to him. And he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and alighting on him. And behold, there was a voice from heaven, saying: “This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.” (Matthew 3:16-17)
Behold my servant, I will uphold him, my elect, with him my soul is well-pleased. I have sent my Spirit upon him. He will offer judgment to the nations. He will not cry out, and he will not show favoritism to anyone; neither will his voice be heard abroad. (Isaiah 42:1-2)
The bruised reed he will not break, and the smoldering wick he will not extinguish. He will lead forth judgment unto truth. He will not be saddened or troubled, until he establishes judgment on earth. And the islands will await his law. (Isaiah 42:3-4)
I, the Lord, have called you in justice, and I have taken your hand and preserved you. And I have presented you as a covenant of the people, as a light to the Gentiles, so that you may open the eyes of the blind, and lead out the prisoner from confinement and those sitting in darkness from the house of incarceration. (Isaiah 42:6-7)

Second Luminous Mystery: The Wedding at Cana

1 Our Father
10 Hail Marys

And on the third day, a wedding was held in Cana of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. Now Jesus was also invited to the wedding, with his disciples. (John 2:1-2)
And when the wine was failing, the mother of Jesus said to him, “They have no wine.” And Jesus said to her: “What is that to me and to you, woman? My hour has not yet arrived.” His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.” (John 2:3-5)
Now in that place, there were six stone water jars, for the purification ritual of the Jews, containing two or three measures each. Jesus said to them, “Fill the water jars with water.” And they filled them to the very top. (John 2:6-7)
And Jesus said to them, “Now draw from it, and carry it to the chief steward of the feast.” And they took it to him. (John 2:8)
Then, when the chief steward had tasted the water made into wine, since he did not know where it was from, for only the servants who had drawn the water knew, the chief steward called the groom. (John 2:9)
And he said to him: “Every man offers the good wine first, and then, when they have become inebriated, he offers what is worse. But you have kept the good wine until now.” (John 2:10)
This was the beginning of the signs that Jesus accomplished in Cana of Galilee, and it manifested his glory, and his disciples believed in him. (John 2:11)
Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I am speaking to you, I do not speak from myself. But the Father abiding in me, he does these works. (John 14:10)
In him we trust, and so we approach with confidence, through his faith. For the unremitting prayer of a just person prevails over many things. (Ephesians 3:12; James 5:16)
Now to him who is able to do all things, more abundantly than we could ever ask or understand, by means of the virtue which is at work in us: to him be glory, in the Church and in Christ Jesus, throughout every generation, forever and ever. Amen. (Ephesians 3:20-21)

Third Luminous Mystery: The Proclamation of the Kingdom

1 Our Father
10 Hail Marys

Jesus began to preach, and to say: “Repent. For the kingdom of heaven has drawn near.” And Jesus traveled throughout all of Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the Gospel of the kingdom, and healing every sickness and every infirmity among the people. (Matthew 4:17, 23)
And reports of him went out to all of Syria, and they brought to him all those who had maladies, those who were in the grasp of various sicknesses and torments, and those who were in the hold of demons, and the mentally ill, and paralytics. And he cured them. (Matthew 4:24)
Then, seeing the crowds, he ascended the mountain, and when he had sat down, his disciples drew near to him, and opening his mouth, he taught them, saying: “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. (Matthew 5:1-3)
Blessed are the meek, for they shall possess the earth. Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be consoled. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for justice, for they shall be satisfied. Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy. (Matthew 5:4-7)
Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God. Blessed are those who endure persecution for the sake of justice, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. (Matthew 5:8-10)
Blessed are you when they have slandered you, and persecuted you, and spoken all kinds of evil against you, falsely, for my sake: be glad and exult, for your reward in heaven is plentiful. (Matthew 5:11-12)
Love your enemies. Do good to those who hate you. Bless those who curse you, and pray for those who slander you. And to him who strikes you on the cheek, offer the other also. And from him who takes away your coat, do not withhold even your tunic. (Luke 6:27-29)
But distribute to all who ask of you. And do not ask again of him who takes away what is yours. And exactly as you would want people to treat you, treat them also the same. And if you love those who love you, what credit is due to you? For even sinners love those who love them. (Luke 6:30-32)
And if you will do good to those who do good to you, what credit is due to you? Indeed, even sinners behave this way. And if you will loan to those from whom you hope to receive, what credit is due to you? For even sinners lend to sinners, in order to receive the same in return. (Luke 6:33-34)
Do not judge, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven. Give, and it will be given to you. (Luke 6:37-38)

Fourth Luminous Mystery: The Transfiguration

1 Our Father
10 Hail Marys

And after six days, Jesus took Peter and James and his brother John, and he led them onto a lofty mountain separately. And he was transfigured before them. And his face shined brightly like the sun. And his garments were made white like snow. (Matthew 17:1-2)
And behold, there appeared to them Moses and Elijah, speaking with him. And they spoke of his departure, which he would accomplish at Jerusalem. (Matthew 17:3; Luke 9:31)
And Peter responded by saying to Jesus: “Lord, it is good for us to be here. If you are willing, let us make three tabernacles here, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” For he did not know what he was saying. For they were overwhelmed by fear. (Matthew 17:4, Mark 9:5)
And while he was still speaking, behold, a shining cloud overshadowed them. And behold, there was a voice from the cloud, saying: “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased. Listen to him.” And the disciples, hearing this, fell prone on their face, and they were very afraid. (Matthew 17:5-6)
And Jesus drew near and touched them. And he said to them, “Rise up and do not be afraid.” And lifting up their eyes, they saw no one, except Jesus alone. And as they were descending from the mountain, Jesus instructed them, saying, “Tell no one about the vision, until the Son of man has risen from the dead.” (Matthew 17:7-9)
For it was not by following fanciful doctrines that we made known to you the power and presence of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were made eyewitnesses of his greatness. (2 Peter 1:16)
For he received honor and glory from God the Father, whose voice descended to him from the magnificent glory: “This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. Listen to him.” (2 Peter 1:17)
We also heard this voice conveyed from heaven, when we were with him on the holy mountain. And so, we have an even firmer prophetic word, to which you would do well to listen, as to a light shining within a dark place, until the day dawns, and the daystar rises, in your hearts. (2 Peter 1:18-19)
He who was from the beginning, whom we have heard, whom we have seen with our eyes, upon whom we have gazed, and whom our hands have certainly touched: He is the Word of Life. And that Life has been made manifest. And we have seen, and we testify, and we announce to you: the Eternal Life, who was with the Father, and who appeared to us. (1 John 1-2)
And this we write to you, so that you may rejoice, and so that your joy may be full. And this is the announcement which we have heard from him, and which we announce to you: that God is light, and in him there is no darkness. (1 John 1: 4-5)

Fifth Luminous Mystery: The Institution of the Eucharist

1 Our Father
10 Hail Marys

And he sent Peter and John, saying, “Go out, and prepare the Passover for us, so that we may eat.” But they said, “Where do you want us to prepare it?” And he said to them: “Behold, as you are entering into the city, a certain man will meet you, carrying a pitcher of water. And he will show you a large cenacle, fully furnished. And so, prepare it there.” And going out, they found it to be just as he had told them. And they prepared the Passover. (Luke 22:8-9, 13)
And when the hour had arrived, he sat down at table, and the twelve Apostles with him. And he said to them: “With longing have I desired to eat this Passover with you, before I suffer. For I say to you, that from this time, I will not eat it, until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God. (Luke 22:14-16)
Now while they were eating the meal, Jesus took bread, and he blessed and broke and gave it to his disciples, and he said: “Take and eat. This is my body.” And taking the chalice, he gave thanks. And he gave it to them, saying: “Drink from this, all of you. For this is my blood of the new covenant, which shall be shed for many as a remission of sins. But I say to you, I will not drink again from this fruit of the vine, until that day when I will drink it new with you in the kingdom of my Father.” (Matthew 26:26-29)
Jesus said these things, and then, lifting up his eyes toward heaven, he said: “Father, the hour has arrived: glorify your Son, so that your Son may glorify you, just as you have given authority over all flesh to him, so that he may give eternal life to all those whom you have given to him. (John 17:1-2)
I am the bread of life. {6:49} Your fathers ate manna in the desert, and they died. This is the bread which descends from heaven, so that if anyone will eat from it, he may not die. (John 6:48-50)
Amen, amen, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of man and drink his blood, you will not have life in you. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day. For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink. (John 6:54-56)
Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood abides in me, and I in him. Just as the living Father has sent me and I live because of the Father, so also whoever eats me, the same shall live because of me. This is the bread that descends from heaven. It is not like the manna that your fathers ate, for they died. Whoever eats this bread shall live forever.” (John 6:57-59)
He rose up from the meal, and he set aside his vestments, and when he had received a towel, he wrapped it around himself. Next he put water into a shallow bowl, and he began to wash the feet of the disciples and to wipe them with the towel with which he was wrapped. (John 13:4-5)
And so, after he washed their feet and received his vestments, when he had sat down at table again, he said to them: “Do you know what I have done for you? You call me Teacher and Lord, and you speak well: for so I am. Therefore, if I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash the feet of one another. (John 13:12-14)
For I have given you an example, so that just as I have done for you, so also should you do. Amen, amen, I say to you, the servant is not greater than his Lord, and the apostle is not greater than he who sent him. If you understand this, you shall be blessed if you will do it." (John 13:15-17)

First Sorrowful Mystery: The Agony in the Garden
1 Our Father
10 Hail Marys

And departing, he went out, according to his custom, to the Mount of Olives. And his disciples also followed him. And when he had arrived at the place, he said to them: “Pray, lest you enter into temptation.” And he was separated from them by about a stone’s throw. (Luke 22:39-41)
And kneeling down, he prayed, saying: “Father, if you are willing, take this chalice away from me. Yet truly, let not my will, but yours, be done.” Then an Angel appeared to him from heaven, strengthening him. And being in agony, he prayed more intensely; and so his sweat became like drops of blood, running down to the ground. (Luke 22:42-44)
And when he had risen up from prayer and had gone to his disciples, he found them sleeping out of sorrow. And he said to them: “Why are you sleeping? Rise up, pray, lest you enter into temptation.” (Luke 22:45-46)
Again, a second time, he went and prayed. And again, he went and found them sleeping, for their eyes were heavy. And leaving them behind, again he went and prayed for the third time, saying the same words. (Matthew 26:42-44)
Then he approached his disciples and said to them: “Sleep now and rest. Behold, the hour has drawn near, and the Son of man will be delivered into the hands of sinners. Rise up; let us go. Behold, he who will betray me draws near.” (Matthew 26:45-46)
While he was still speaking, behold, Judas, one of the twelve, arrived, and with him was a large crowd with swords and clubs, sent from the leaders of the priests and the elders of the people. And he who betrayed him gave them a sign, saying: “Whomever I will kiss, it is he. Take hold of him.” And quickly drawing close to Jesus, he said, “Hail, Master.” And he kissed him. And Jesus said to him, “Friend, for what purpose have you come?” (Matthew 26:47-50)
And so Jesus, knowing all that was about to happen to him, advanced and said to them, “Who are you seeking?” They answered him, “Jesus the Nazarene.” Jesus said to them, “I am he.” Then, when he said to them, “I am he,” they moved back and fell to the ground. (John 18:4-7)
Then again he questioned them: “Who are you seeking?” And they said, “Jesus the Nazarene.” Jesus responded: “I told you that I am he. Therefore, if you are seeking me, permit these others to go away.” This was so that the word might be fulfilled, which he said, “Of those whom you have given to me, I have not lost any of them.” (John 18:8-9)
Then those who were around him, realizing what was about to happen, said to him: “Lord, shall we strike with the sword?” And one of them struck the servant of the high priest and cut off his right ear. Then Jesus said to him: “Put your sword back in its place. For all who take up the sword shall perish by the sword. Or do you think that I cannot ask my Father, so that he would give me, even now, more than twelve legions of Angels? How then would the Scriptures be fulfilled, which say that it must be so?” And when he had touched his ear, he healed him. (Luke 22:49-51, 22:5, 26:52-54)
Then Jesus said to the leaders of the priests, and the magistrates of the temple, and the elders, who had come to him: “Have you gone out, as if against a thief, with swords and clubs? When I was with you each day in the temple, you did not extend your hands against me. But this is your hour and that of the power of darkness.” And apprehending him, they led him to the house of the high priest. (Luke 22:52-54)

Second Sorrowful Mystery: The Scourging at the Pillar

Then they led Jesus from Caiaphas into the praetorium. Now it was morning, and so they did not enter into the praetorium, so that they would not be defiled, but might eat the Passover. Therefore, Pilate went outside to them, and he said, “What accusation are you bringing against this man?” (John 18:28-29)
They responded and said to him, “If he were not an evil-doer, we would not have handed him over you.” Therefore, Pilate said to them, “Take him yourselves and judge him according to your own law.” Then the Jews said to him, “It is not lawful for us to execute anyone.” This was so that the word of Jesus would be fulfilled, which he spoke signifying what kind of death he would die. (John 18:30-32)
Then Pilate entered the praetorium again, and he called Jesus and said to him, “You are the king of the Jews?” Jesus responded, “Are you saying this of yourself, or have others spoken to you about me?” Pilate responded: “Am I a Jew? Your own nation and the high priests have handed you over to me. What have you done?” (John 18:33-35)
Jesus responded: “My kingdom is not of this world. If my kingdom were of this world, my ministers would certainly strive so that I would not be handed over to the Jews. But my kingdom is not now from here.” (John 18:36)
And so Pilate said to him, “You are a king, then?” Jesus answered, “You are saying that I am a king. For this I was born, and for this I came into the world: so that I may offer testimony to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth hears my voice.” Pilate said to him, “What is truth?” (John 18:37-38)
Now on the feast day, he was accustomed to release to them one of the prisoners, whomever they requested. But there was one called Barabbas, who had committed murder in the sedition, who was confined with those of the sedition. And when the crowd had ascended, they began to petition him to do as he always did for them. (Mark 15:6-8)
But Pilate answered them and said, “Do you want me to release to you the king of the Jews?” For he knew that it was out of envy that the leaders of the priests had betrayed him. Then the chief priests incited the crowd, so that he would release Barabbas to them instead. (Mark 15:9-11)
But Pilate, responding again, said to them: “Then what do you want me to do with the king of the Jews?” But again they cried out, “Crucify him.” Yet truly, Pilate said to them: “Why? What evil has he done?” But they cried out all the more, “Crucify him.” Then Pilate, wishing to satisfy the people, released Barabbas to them, and he delivered Jesus, having severely scourged him, to be crucified. (Mark 15:12-15)
From the sole of the foot, even to the top of the head, there is no soundness within. Wounds and bruises and swelling sores: these are not bandaged, nor treated with medicine, nor soothed with oil. (Isaiah 1:6)
Truly, he has taken away our weaknesses, and he himself has carried our sorrows. And we thought of him as if he were a leper, or as if he had been struck by God and humiliated. But he himself was wounded because of our iniquities. He was bruised because of our wickedness. The discipline of our peace was upon him. And by his wounds, we are healed. (Isaiah 53:4-5)

Third Sorrowful Mystery: The Crowning with Thorns

10 Hail Marys

Then the soldiers of the procurator, taking Jesus up to the praetorium, gathered the entire cohort around him. And stripping him, they put a scarlet cloak around him. (Matthew 27:27-28)
And plaiting a crown of thorns, they placed it on his head, with a reed in his right hand. And genuflecting before him, they mocked him, saying, “Hail, King of the Jews.” And after they had mocked him, they stripped him of the cloak, and clothed him with his own garments, and they led him away to crucify him. (Matthew 27:29, 31)
So then, why is your garment red, and why are your vestments like the ones of those who tread the winepress? I have trod the winepress alone. And among the nations, there is no man beside me. (Isaiah 63:2-3)
He promises that he has the knowledge of God and he calls himself the son of God. Let us see, then, if his words are true, and let us test what will happen to him, and then we will know what his end will be. For if he is the true son of God, he will receive him and deliver him from the hands of his adversaries. (Wisdom 2:13, 17-18)
Let us examine him with insult and torture, that we may know his reverence and try his patience. Let us condemn him to a most shameful death, for, according to his own words, God will care for him.” (Wisdom 2:19-20)
I have given my body to those who strike me, and my cheeks to those who plucked them. I have not averted my face from those who rebuked me and who spit on me. (Isaiah 50:6)
I have become a disgrace among all my enemies, and even more so to my neighbors, and a dread to my acquaintances. Those who catch sight of me, flee away from me. (Psalms: 30:12)
I have become forgotten, like one dead to the heart. I have become like a damaged utensil. For I have heard the harsh criticism of many who linger in the area. While assembled together against me in that place, they deliberated on how to take away my life. (Psalms 30:13-14)
Those who hate me without cause have been multiplied beyond the hairs of my head. My enemies, who persecuted me unjustly, have been strengthened. (Psalms 68:5)
Then Jesus took the twelve aside, and he said to them: “Behold, we are ascending to Jerusalem, and everything shall be completed which was written by the prophets about the Son of man. For he will be handed over to the Gentiles, and he will be mocked and scourged and spit upon. And after they have scourged him, they will kill him. And on the third day, he will rise again.” (Luke 18:31-33)

Fourth Sorrowful Mystery: The Carrying of the Cross

1 Our Father
10 Hail Marys

And as they were leading him away, they apprehended a certain one, Simon of Cyrene, as he was returning from the countryside. And they imposed the cross on him to carry after Jesus. (Luke 23:26)
Then a great crowd of people followed him, with women who were mourning and lamenting him. But Jesus, turning to them, said: “Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep over me. Instead, weep over yourselves and over your children. (Luke 23:27-28)
For behold, the days will arrive in which they will say, ‘Blessed are the barren, and the wombs that have not borne, and the breasts that have not nursed.’ Then they will begin to say to the mountains, ‘Fall over us,’ and to the hills, ‘Cover us.’ For if they do these things with green wood, what will be done with the dry?” (Luke 23:29-31)
We have all gone astray like sheep; each one has turned aside to his own way. And the Lord has placed all our iniquity upon him. (Isaiah 53:46)
He was offered up, because it was his own will. And he did not open his mouth. He will be led like a sheep to the slaughter. And he will be mute like a lamb before his shearer. For he will not open his mouth. (Isaiah 53:7)
Because his soul has labored, he will see and be satisfied. By his knowledge, my just servant will himself justify many, and he himself will carry their iniquities. (Isaiah 53:11)
Let us gaze upon Jesus, as the Author and the completion of our faith, who, having joy laid out before him, endured the cross, disregarding the shame, and who now sits at the right hand of the throne of God. (Hebrews 12:2)
I have become miserable, and I have been bent down, even to the end. I have walked with contrition all day long. For my loins have been filled with illusions, and there is no health in my flesh. I have been afflicted and greatly humbled. I bellowed from the groaning of my heart. (Psalms 37:7-9)
And calling together the crowd with his disciples, he said to them, “If anyone chooses to follow me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me. For whoever will have chosen to save his life, will lose it. But whoever will have lost his life, for my sake and for the Gospel, shall save it. (Mark 8:34-35)
And whoever does not take up his cross, and follow me is not worthy of me. She is a tree of life to those who overtake her, and he who shall take hold of her is blessed. (Matthew 10:38; Proverbs 3:18)

Fifth Sorrowful Mystery: The Crucifixion

1 Our Father
10 Hail Marys

And they arrived at the place which is called Golgotha, which is the place of Calvary. And they gave him wine to drink, mixed with gall. And when he had tasted it, he refused to drink it. Then, after they had crucified him, they divided his garments, casting lots, in order to fulfill what was spoken by the prophet, saying: “They divided my garments among them, and over my vestment they cast lots.” And sitting down, they observed him. (Matthew 27:33-36)
And standing beside the cross of Jesus were his mother, and his mother’s sister, and Mary of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalene. Therefore, when Jesus had seen his mother and the disciple whom he loved standing near, he said to his mother, “Woman, behold your son.” Next, he said to the disciple, “Behold your mother.” And from that hour, the disciple accepted her as his own. (John 19:25-27)
And they set his accusation above his head, written as: THIS IS JESUS, KING OF THE JEWS. Then two robbers were crucified with him: one on the right and one on the left. Then Jesus said, “Father, forgive them. For they know not what they do.” But those passing by blasphemed him, shaking their heads, and saying: “Ah, so you would destroy the temple of God and in three days rebuild it! Save your own self. If you are the Son of God, descend from the cross.” (Matthew 27:37-40)
And similarly, the leaders of the priests, with the scribes and the elders, mocking him, said: “He saved others; he cannot save himself. If he is the King of Israel, let him descend now from the cross, and we will believe in him. He trusted in God; so now, let God free him, if he wills him. For he said, ‘I am the Son of God.’ ” (Matthew 27:41-43)
And one of those robbers who were hanging blasphemed him, saying, “If you are the Christ, save yourself and us.” But the other responded by rebuking him, saying: “Do you have no fear of God, since you are under the same condemnation? And indeed, it is just for us. For we are receiving what our deeds deserve. But truly, this one has done nothing wrong.” And he said to Jesus, “Lord, remember me when you come into your kingdom.” And Jesus said to him, “Amen I say to you, this day you shall be with me in Paradise.” (Luke: 23:39-43)
Now from the sixth hour, there was darkness over the entire earth, even until the ninth hour. And about the ninth hour, Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying: “Eli, Eli, lamma sabacthani?” that is, “My God, My God, why have you forsaken me?” Then certain ones who were standing and listening there said, “This man calls upon Elijah.” (Matthew 27:45-47)
And one of them, running quickly, took a sponge and filled it with vinegar, and he set it on a reed and he gave it to him to drink. Yet truly, the others said, “Wait. Let us see whether Elijah will come to free him.” Then Jesus, when he had received the vinegar, said: “It is consummated.” And bowing down his head, he surrendered his spirit. (Matthew 27:48-49; John 19:30)
And behold, the veil of the temple was torn into two parts, from top to bottom. And the earth was shaken, and the rocks were split apart. And the tombs were opened. And many bodies of the saints, which had been sleeping, arose. Now the centurion and those who were with him, guarding Jesus, having seen the earthquake and the things that were done, were very fearful, saying: “Truly, this was the Son of God.” (Matthew: 27:51-54)
Then the Jews, because it was the preparation day, so that the bodies would not remain upon the cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was a great day), they petitioned Pilate in order that their legs might be broken, and they might be taken away. Therefore, the soldiers approached, and, indeed, they broke the legs of the first one, and of the other who was crucified with him. But after they had approached Jesus, when they saw that he was already dead, they did not break his legs. Instead, one of the soldiers opened his side with a lance, and immediately there went out blood and water. (John 19:31-34)
Then, when evening had arrived, a certain wealthy man from Arimathea, named Joseph, arrived, who himself was also a disciple of Jesus. This man approached Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. Then Pilate ordered the body to be released. And Joseph, taking the body, wrapped it in a clean finely-woven linen cloth, and he placed it in his own new tomb, which he had hewn out of a rock. And he rolled a great stone to the door of the tomb, and he went away. (Matthew 27:57-60)

First Glorious Mystery: The Resurrection

1 Our Father
10 Hail Marys

Then on the first Sabbath, Mary Magdalene went to the tomb early, while it was still dark, and she saw that the stone had been rolled away from the tomb. Therefore, she ran and went to Simon Peter, and to the other disciple, whom Jesus loved, and she said to them, “They have taken the Lord away from the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid him.” Therefore, Peter departed with the other disciple, and they went to the tomb. (John 20:1-3)
Now they both ran together, but the other disciple ran more quickly, ahead of Peter, and so he arrived at the tomb first. And when he bowed down, he saw the linen cloths lying there, but he did not yet enter. Then Simon Peter arrived, following him, and he entered the tomb, and he saw the linen cloths lying there, and the separate cloth which had been over his head, not placed with the linen cloths, but in a separate place, wrapped up by itself. (John 20:4-7)
Then the other disciple, who had arrived first at the tomb, also entered. And he saw and believed. For as yet they did not understand the Scripture, that it was necessary for him to rise again from the dead. Then the disciples went away again, each by himself. (John 20:8-10)
But Mary was standing outside the tomb, weeping. Then, while she was weeping, she bowed down and gazed into the tomb. And she saw two Angels in white, sitting where the body of Jesus had been placed, one at the head, and one at the feet. They said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping?” She said to them, “Because they have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have placed him.” (John 20: 11-13)
When she had said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not know that it was Jesus. Jesus said to her: “Woman, why are you weeping? Who are you seeking?” Considering that it was the gardener, she said to him, “Sir, if you have moved him, tell me where you have placed him, and I will take him away.” Jesus said to her, “Mary!” And turning, she said to him, “Rabboni!” (which means, Teacher). (John 20:14-16)
Jesus said to her: “Do not touch me. For I have not yet ascended to my Father. But go to my brothers and tell them: ‘I am ascending to my Father and to your Father, to my God and to your God.’ ” Mary Magdalene went, announcing to the disciples, “I have seen the Lord, and these are the things that he said to me.” (John 20:17-18)
Then, when it was late on the same day, on the first of the Sabbaths, and the doors were closed where the disciples were gathered, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in their midst, and he said to them: “Peace to you.” And when he had said this, he showed them his hands and side. And the disciples were gladdened when they saw the Lord. (John 20:19-20)
Therefore, he said to them again: “Peace to you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.” When he had said this, he breathed on them. And he said to them: “Receive the Holy Spirit. Those whose sins you shall forgive, they are forgiven them, and those whose sins you shall retain, they are retained.” (John 20:21-23)
Now Thomas, one of the twelve, who is called the Twin, was not with them when Jesus arrived. Therefore, the other disciples said to him, “We have seen the Lord.” But he said to them, “Unless I will see in his hands the mark of the nails and place my finger into the place of the nails, and place my hand into his side, I will not believe.” (John 20:24-25)
And after eight days, again his disciples were within, and Thomas was with them. Jesus arrived, though the doors had been closed, and he stood in their midst and said, “Peace to you.” Next, he said to Thomas: “Look at my hands, and place your finger here; and bring your hand close, and place it at my side. And do not choose to be unbelieving, but faithful.” Thomas responded and said to him, “My Lord and my God.” Jesus said to him: “You have seen me, Thomas, so you have believed. Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.” (John 20:26-29)

Second Glorious Mystery: The Ascension

1 Our Father
10 Hail Marys

While they were watching, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him from their sight. And while they were watching him going up to heaven, behold, two men stood near them in white vestments. And they said: “Men of Galilee, why do you stand here looking up toward heaven? This Jesus, who has been taken up from you into heaven, shall return in just the same way that you have seen him going up to heaven.” (Acts of the Apostles 1:8-11)
And he said to them: Go forth to the whole world and preach the Gospel to every creature. And indeed, the Lord Jesus, after he had spoken to them, was taken up into heaven, and he sits at the right hand of God. (Mark 16:15, 16:19)
And then the sign of the Son of man shall appear in heaven. And then all tribes of the earth shall mourn. And they shall see the Son of man coming on the clouds of heaven, with great power and majesty. And he shall send out his Angels with a trumpet and a great voice. And they shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from the heights of the heavens, even to their furthest limits. (Matthew 24:30-31)
Then he led them out as far as Bethania. And lifting up his hands, he blessed them. And it happened that, while he was blessing them, he withdrew from them, and he was carried up into heaven. (Luke 24:50-51)
Greater things than these, you will see. And he said to him, Amen, amen, I say to you, you will see heaven opened, and the Angels of God ascending and descending over the Son of man. (John 1:50-51)
And no one has ascended to heaven, except the one who descended from heaven: the Son of man who is in heaven. And just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the desert, so also must the Son of man be lifted up, so that whoever believes in him may not perish, but may have eternal life. (John 3:13-15)
You have heard that I said to you: I am going away, and I am returning to you. If you loved me, certainly you would be gladdened, because I am going to the Father. For the Father is greater than I. And now I have told you this, before it happens, so that, when it will happen, you may believe. (John 14:28-29)
But I tell you the truth: it is expedient for you that I am going. For if I do not go, the Advocate will not come to you. But when I will have gone away, I will send him to you. And when he has arrived, he will argue against the world, about sin and about justice and about judgment: about sin, indeed, because they have not believed in me; about justice, truly, because I am going to the Father, and you will not see me any longer. (John 16:7-10)
Now that he has ascended, what is left except for him also to descend, first to the lower parts of the earth? He who descended is the same one who also ascended above all the heavens, so that he might fulfill everything. (Ephesians 4:9-10)
All nations, clap your hands. Shout joyfully to God with a voice of exultation. For the Lord is exalted and terrible: a great King over all the earth. He has subjected the peoples to us and subdued the nations under our feet. He has chosen us for his inheritance: the splendor of Jacob, whom he has loved. God ascends with jubilation, and the Lord with the voice of the trumpet. (Psalms 46:2-6)

Third Glorious Mystery: The Descent of the Holy Spirit

1 Our Father
10 Hail Marys

I will ask the Father, and he will give another Advocate to you, so that he may abide with you for eternity: the Spirit of Truth, whom the world is not able to accept, because it neither perceives him nor knows him. But you shall know him. For he will remain with you, and he will be in you. (John 14: 16-17)
And when they had entered into the cenacle, they ascended to the place where Peter and John, James and Andrew, Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew, James of Alphaeus and Simon the Zealot, and Jude of James, were staying. All these were persevering with one accord in prayer with the women, and with Mary, the mother of Jesus, and with his brothers. (Acts of the Apostles 1:13-14)
And when the days of Pentecost were completed, they were all together in the same place. And suddenly, there came a sound from heaven, like that of a wind approaching violently, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. And there appeared to them separate tongues, as if of fire, which settled upon each one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit. And they began to speak in various languages, just as the Holy Spirit bestowed eloquence to them. (Acts of the Apostles 2:1-4)
Now there were Jews staying in Jerusalem, pious men from every nation that is under heaven. And when this sound occurred, the multitude came together and was confused in mind, because each one was listening to them speaking in his own language. Then all were astonished, and they wondered, saying: “Behold, are not all of these who are speaking Galileans? And how is it that we have each heard them in our own language, into which we were born? (Acts of the Apostles 2:5-8)
And they were all astonished, and they wondered, saying to one another: “But what does this mean?” But others mockingly said, “These men are full of new wine.” But Peter, standing up with the eleven, lifted up his voice, and he spoke to them: “Men of Judea, and all those who are staying in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and incline your ears to my words. For these men are not inebriated, as you suppose, for it is the third hour of the day. (Acts of the Apostles 2:12-15)
But this is what was spoken of by the prophet Joel: ‘And this shall be: in the last days, says the Lord, I will pour out, from my Spirit, upon all flesh. And your sons and your daughters shall prophesy. And your youths shall see visions, and your elders shall dream dreams. And certainly, upon my men and women servants in those days, I will pour out from my Spirit, and they shall prophesy. And this shall be: whoever shall invoke the name of the Lord will be saved.’ (Acts of the Apostles 2:16-18, 21)
Now when they had heard these things, they were contrite in heart, and they said to Peter and to the other Apostles: “What should we do, noble brothers?” Peter said to them: “Do penance; and be baptized, each one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ, for the remission of your sins. And you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. For the Promise is for you and for your sons, and for all who are far away: for whomever the Lord our God will have called.” (Acts of the Apostles 2:37-39)
And then, with very many other words, he testified and he exhorted them, saying, “Save yourselves from this depraved generation.” Therefore, those who accepted his discourse were baptized. And about three thousand souls were added on that day. (Acts of the Apostles 2:40-41)
I will give to you a new heart, and I will place in you a new spirit. And I will take away the heart of stone from your body, and I will give to you a heart of flesh. And I will place my Spirit in your midst. And I will act so that you may walk in my precepts and keep my judgments, and so that you may fulfill them. (Ezekiel 36:26-27)
Create a clean heart in me, O God. And renew an upright spirit within my inmost being. Do not cast me away from your face; and do not take your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and confirm me with an unsurpassed spirit. O Lord, you will open my lips, and my mouth will announce your praise. (Psalms 50:12-14, 17)

Fourth Glorious Mystery: The Assumption of Our Lady

10 Hail Marys

Bride in search of her groom:

My beloved is white and ruddy, elect among thousands. His head is like the finest gold. His locks are like the heights of palm trees, and as black as a raven. His eyes are like doves, which have been washed with milk over rivulets of waters, and which reside near plentiful streams. His cheeks are like a courtyard of aromatic plants, sown by perfumers. His lips are like lilies, dripping with the best myrrh. (Song of Songs 5:12-15)
His hands are smoothed gold, full of hyacinths. His abdomen is ivory, accented with sapphires. His legs are columns of marble, which have been established over bases of gold. His appearance is like that of Lebanon, elect like the cedars. His throat is most sweet, and he is entirely desirable. Such is my beloved, and he is my friend, O daughters of Jerusalem. (Song of Songs 5:16-18)
I will rise up, and I will circle through the city. Through the side streets and thoroughfares, I will seek him whom my soul loves. The watchers who guard the city found me: “Have you seen him whom my soul loves?” When I had passed by them a little, I found him whom my soul loves. (Song of Songs 3:2-4)
The voice of my beloved! Behold, he arrives leaping along the mountains, jumping across the hills. My beloved is like a doe and like a young stag. Lo, he stands beyond our wall, gazing through the windows, watching through the lattices. Return, O my beloved. Be like a doe and like a young stag upon the mountains of Bether. (Song of Songs 2:8-10, 19)
I am a flower of the open field and a lily of the steep valleys. My beloved is for me, and I am for him. He pastures among the lilies, until the day rises and the shadows decline. My beloved has descended to his garden, to the courtyard of aromatic plants, in order to pasture in the gardens and gather the lilies. I sought the Lord, and he heeded me, and he carried me away from all my tribulations. (Song of Songs 2:1, 18, 6:1; Psalms 33:5)

Groom welcoming his bride:

Who is she, who ascends through the desert, like a staff of smoke from the aromatics of myrrh, and frankincense, and every powder of the perfumer? Rise up, quickly, my love, my dove, my shapely one, and advance. (Song of Songs 2:12, 3:6)
Behold, you are beautiful, O my love. Behold, you are beautiful. Your eyes are those of a dove. You are totally beautiful, my love, and there is no blemish in you. Your lips, my spouse, are a dripping honeycomb; honey and milk are under your tongue. And the fragrance of your garments is like the odor of frankincense. (Song of Songs 1:19, 4:7, 11)
Like a lily among the thorns, so is my loved one among the daughters. An enclosed garden is my sister, my spouse: an enclosed garden, a sealed fountain. My dove in the clefts of the rock, in the hollows of the wall, reveal to me your face. Let your voice sound in my ears. For your voice is sweet, and your face is graceful. My love, you are beautiful: sweet and graceful, like Jerusalem; terrible, like an army in battle array. (Song of Songs 2:2, 16, 4:12, 6:3)
For winter has now past; the rain has decreased and gone away. The flowers have appeared in our land; the time for pruning has arrived. The voice of the turtledove has been heard in our land. The fig tree has brought forth its green figs; the flowering vines bestow their odor. Rise up, my love, my brilliant one, and advance. (Song of Songs 2:13-15)
And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will return again, and then I will take you to myself, so that where I am, you also may be. (John 14:3)

Fifth Glorious Mystery: The Coronation of Our Lady

1 Our Father
10 Hail Marys

You are the glory of Jerusalem, you are the joy of Israel, you are the honor of our people... the hand of the Lord has strengthened you, and, therefore, you will be blessed for all eternity. (Judith 15:10-11)
Blessed are you by your God, in every tabernacle of Jacob, for in every nation that will hear of your name, the God of Israel will be magnified over you. They will remember your name always, for generation after generation. Because of this, people will confess to you in eternity, even forever and ever. (Judith 13:31; Psalms 44:18)
You are a brilliant form before the sons of men. Grace has been poured freely into your lips. Because of this, God has blessed you in eternity. Glorious things are being said of you, O City of God. (Psalms 44:3, 86:3)
To what shall I compare you, or to what shall I liken you, O daughter of Jerusalem? To what shall I equate you, O virgin daughter of Zion? Your cheeks are beautiful, like those of a turtledove. Your neck is like a bejeweled collar. (Lamentations 2:13; Song of Songs 1:14)
And the daughters of Tyre will entreat your countenance with gifts: all the rich men of the people. All the glory of the daughter of its king is inside, in golden fringes, clothed all around with diversities. (Psalms 44:13-15)
For she is more spectacular than the sun, and above the array of all the stars; compared with the light, she is found to be before it. (Wisdom 7:29)
The daughters saw her, and they proclaimed her most blessed. The queens and concubines saw her, and they praised her. This is the gate of the Lord. The just will enter by it. (Song of Songs 6:8; Psalms 117:20)
She will be honored by God, and she will be glorified in the midst of her people... And she will open her mouth in the churches of the Most High, and she will be glorified in the sight of his virtue. And in the midst of her own people, she will be exalted. And she will be admired by the holy assembly. And she will have praise within the multitude of the elect. And she will be blessed among the blessed. And she will say: I lived in the highest places, and my throne is in the pillar of a cloud. (Sirach 24:1-4, 7)
And a great sign appeared in heaven: a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon was under her feet, and on her head was a crown of twelve stars. And the temple of God was opened in heaven. And the Ark of his Testament was seen in his temple. And there were lightnings and voices and thunders, and an earthquake, and great hail. (Revelation 11:19, 12:1)
And a throne was stationed for the mother of the king, and she sat at his right hand. Then the King shall say to those who will be on his right: Come, you blessed of my Father. Possess the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. (1 Kings 2:19; Matthew 25:34)
